MOJO magazine is a rock magazine that is mainly aimed at older men who have an interest in rock music. By having Joni Mitchell smiling, it connotes a friendly and welcoming cover that may not only appeal to the typical MOJO audience but a different one too. Although the presentation of Joni is positive there is a quote underneath that creates a contrasting view of being a rock star. By describing her 'gift' as a 'tragedy' it displays the reality of being in the limelight and perhaps the pressure that brings; the black and white colours connotes seriousness and a sense of formality but also may hint at the darker thoughts behind her life.
The reference to other artists such as David Bowie pull readers into the content within the magazine , ' untold story!...betrayal' are key quotes that may appeal to potential readers. David Bowie is someoen who was seen to have a great deal pf strength and is very well known by all audiences. This would make readers want to read the 'untold stories' as David Bowie was and still is a very well known artist.
Mark 3 out of 4 : A very good answer that identifies the ways in which Joni and Bowie share a typical representation amongst MOJO musicians in that they are depicted with respect and treated seriously, against a backdrop of having suffered for their art. Quote the 'agony and ecstasy' too.
ReplyDeleteNote that most MOJO covers feature male musicians so Joni is a counter-stereotypical representation. Equally, it is not common to depict a smiling (apparently joyful and relaxed) musician as the main splash: MOJO covers are usually white, male and serious.
There are also references to the 'magic' of Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian, which connotes his special status and the reverence of the MOJO audience. The Specials feature as typical icons with their 40 years track record.
We now know, since the release of the new practice papers, that they may include a covermount.
