Exam question 8

The observer uses many methods of media language so we as the reader can interpret the newspaper in different ways.
The dark blue colour of the heading connotes the idea of formality and professionalism, the observer has strong stories that appeal to both men and women reading. The blue colour shows us the key stories and ideas we will read in the newspaper. The other colours used such as burgundy imply the slightly less important stories, they still have significance in the newspaper. The online observer includes famous brands, names and companies in an orange colour, the human eye is drawn to these colours and would recognize these words faster. The observer uses sans serif font which implies a modern feel to the observer. The typeface the observer has used implies they are trying to convey ideas of importance.Within the newspaper the layout is organised and set out in ways that portray importance, there are shorter lines so the human eye doesn't have to wander to find the next line. The different headlines show the different views, ethnicity and ideas the newspaper portrays. They have their own objectivity and ideas for their won newspaper. The use of other people's accounts and views (1st person) allows the newspaper to address situations easily to the public; it makes it more relatable to the readers because someone who has read just like them is now having an opinion or giving an account in the newspaper. The observer has an objective to pull in an audience/readers by addressing stories in third and fist person it allows the message to be released more effectively .The observer uses a range of language: hyperbolic language 'get out ' , emotive language ' extraordinary'. There are elements of gender politics 'can i forgive the man who raped me?' female empowerment and standing up to sexual harassment is a huge thing in the news lately and the use of this headline would appeal to women and possibly men who are against this and want change. As humans we are intrigued by failure and suffering in the world, using harsh headlines would draw readers in.

  1. Q.8 "Give two examples" for 5 marks
    Mark 4 out of 5
    1. I would group the two colours burgundy and royal blue together (as signifying seriousness)rather than distinguish between them. You are right in stating that they connote "formality and professionalism".
    2. I would drop the reference to orange as there are SO few details in orange. Go for the big points to secure your 5 marks.
    3. You note that "The observer uses sans serif font which implies a modern feel " which is true of the title only. The body font is a serif font, traditional. As the examiner states the title "connotes a modern and confident paper" while "the use of a serif typeface for the headings connotes formality and objectivity".
    3. The next most significant feature of the layout is: "The highly ordered layout of the home page, use of white as a background, and fairly limited use of photographs and graphics minimises visual clutter and connotes seriousness and objectivity".
    4. Many other sensible points.
