Revision Q1 CUFFS

Analyse how camerawork is used in the extract to create meaning. Refer to at least two examples from the extract in your answer.
Worth 4 marks. Write half a side of A4.

Camerawork is used in Cuffs to create tension between characters. For example, Jake is the son of the Chief of Police and his dad is the reason he has the job in the police force. It is clear that Ryan doesn't agree with the way he has got his job, he believes that Jake should have worked as hard as he did to gain his job. This is shown through the camera work used Ryan makes the comment ' we don't care what people's parents do', the audience then see a focus pull which shows Jake's face. This creates the idea that he is  embarrassed as we see a focus on the other people around him as well as him himself.

Camerawork is also used when Jo reflects on the affair she had with the chief of police, she realizes it was a mistake. This is clear as a close up shot is used to illustrate the raw variety of emotion she feels, emotions such as regret, embarrassment and hurt. The light is also used to emphasize this, the lighting is harsh and dark to show the level of hurt she feels.Camerawork is also used to create meaning in the lunch room, a shot reverse shot is used to show the urgency and the lack of time they have to even talk. This creates a sense of realism as many police officers don't have time to rest, it also shows how the characters are bonding with one another. There is a constant flow of conversation emphasized by the use of the shot reverse shot.

question 1 -Cuffs

How is sound created to use meaning? Give at least two examples
(5 marks)
  • The whirring of heavy machinery in background
  • Off screen sound- panicked tone of police officer at the scene of the crime. Contrast to the calm beforehand
  • non diegetic sound from the police cars
  • diegetic sound  of urgency
  • realism of on screen dialogue, calm and quiet
  • The non diegetic sound of the soundtrack cuts in

The sound at the beginning of the clip is very ordinary and calm, the police officers are having a normal conversation that we, as the audience may have in our day to day lives; also implying relaxation and peace among the officers. However the effect of the abrupt cut of non diegetic sound (the panic of the police officer at the crime scene) creates a chaotic atmosphere that portrays the reality of the work the police officers do. This extreme contrast conveys the idea of intensity and bravery needed to be a policeman. As well as the sound from the police officer there is the non diegetic sound of the smashing of glass;this connotes the idea of violence and danger. As soon as they get in the car the use of the non diegetic siren sound connotes the urgency of the crime to the audience, we feel as if we are in the chase with the officers.

Exam question 8

The observer uses many methods of media language so we as the reader can interpret the newspaper in different ways.
The dark blue colour of the heading connotes the idea of formality and professionalism, the observer has strong stories that appeal to both men and women reading. The blue colour shows us the key stories and ideas we will read in the newspaper. The other colours used such as burgundy imply the slightly less important stories, they still have significance in the newspaper. The online observer includes famous brands, names and companies in an orange colour, the human eye is drawn to these colours and would recognize these words faster. The observer uses sans serif font which implies a modern feel to the observer. The typeface the observer has used implies they are trying to convey ideas of importance.Within the newspaper the layout is organised and set out in ways that portray importance, there are shorter lines so the human eye doesn't have to wander to find the next line. The different headlines show the different views, ethnicity and ideas the newspaper portrays. They have their own objectivity and ideas for their won newspaper. The use of other people's accounts and views (1st person) allows the newspaper to address situations easily to the public; it makes it more relatable to the readers because someone who has read just like them is now having an opinion or giving an account in the newspaper. The observer has an objective to pull in an audience/readers by addressing stories in third and fist person it allows the message to be released more effectively .The observer uses a range of language: hyperbolic language 'get out ' , emotive language ' extraordinary'. There are elements of gender politics 'can i forgive the man who raped me?' female empowerment and standing up to sexual harassment is a huge thing in the news lately and the use of this headline would appeal to women and possibly men who are against this and want change. As humans we are intrigued by failure and suffering in the world, using harsh headlines would draw readers in.

enigma

In our enigma we used a doll as our prop ;we based our short introduction to a film on the story of a girl whose best friend was a doll. She grows too close to the doll and ends up being murdered by the doll as a result of this. We worked well and manged to come up with a concept very quickly,we faced a few problems when filming such as the camera not focusing. However those technical problems were easily fixed . This meant we were able to film efficiently and have some time to edit. We are planning to add music, transitions and effects to create an ominous atmosphere.
